Washington's WWI Memorial Maples Became Invasive Species
Hindustan Times · environment
In 1920, Washington D.C. planted 507 Norway maples on 16th Street to honor soldiers lost in World War I, with each tree dedicated to a local casualty. The American Legion managed the planting, initially including 530 trees and markers. Over time, the memorial faded from public memory, and most plaques disappeared. Now, these memorial trees have become an invasive species, spreading into nearby Rock Creek Park and threatening native forests by competing for resources.
