Scientists determined that decades of warming receded glaciers, thawed permafrost, and increased meltwater, destabilizing the mountain slope. This complex series of factors, rather than a single trigger, led to the catastrophic event on August 26. The resulting flash floods traveled at speeds of 170 kilometers per hour, causing widespread destruction.
