Rebeca Grynspan, former Costa Rican vice-president, is a frontrunner to become the UN's first female secretary-general in its 80-year history. She believes the UN needs leadership willing to take diplomatic risks and has called for reduced bureaucracy and job cuts. Grynspan has reportedly led four out of five informal straw polls conducted by the Security Council. A poll on Friday will use colour-coded ballots to indicate potential opposition from permanent members. The successful candidate is expected to assume office on January 1, 2027.
