India has reportedly closed key glacier and avalanche research facilities, raising concerns about the nation's scientific capacity to address escalating Himalayan disaster risks. The Centre for Glaciology in Dehradun was shut in 2020, and the Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment in Manali was merged into a broader entity. This comes as climate change accelerates glacier retreat and increases the frequency of mountain disasters, threatening hundreds of millions downstream.
