India's Credit Gap Remains Wide Despite Small Finance Bank Expansion
Business Standard · business
Small finance banks (SFBs) have expanded financial inclusion significantly, bringing many underserved customers into the formal banking system. However, industry leaders state that the unmet credit demand in India, estimated at ₹85 trillion, is too vast for the current 11 SFBs to fulfill. At their present growth rate, it would take approximately 65 years to address this gap. While SFBs serve nearly 10% of banking customers with only 1.5% of total credit, they also face challenges in transitioning to universal banking licenses.
