Russian Olive Tree Introduced for Windbreaks Became Invasive in 17 US States
Hindustan Times · environment
Introduced to North America in the early 1900s for windbreaks and soil stability, the Russian olive tree has become an invasive species in California and 16 other Western states. Originally from Europe and Asia, it was promoted for its practical uses, including wildlife shelter and erosion control. However, the tree now displaces native plants, alters stream-bank hydrology, and is difficult to remove due to deep roots. Wildlife agencies recommend early detection and removal before flowering to manage its spread.
