Volantis Secures $88 Million for AI Chip Technology Using Laser Light

Economic Times - Tech · technology

Semiconductor startup Volantis has raised $88 million in venture capital to address a key challenge in AI chip development. The company plans to use laser light technology, specifically vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs), to connect computing and memory chips more efficiently. This approach aims to overcome the reach limitations of current electrical wires, potentially allowing for significantly more memory chips around a graphics processing unit. Volantis expects to deliver a chip next year that could accelerate AI tasks like coding.
