Dayanidhi Maran Flags Concerns Over Proposed Animal Cruelty Rules, Urges Review

DMK Lok Sabha member Dayanidhi Maran has urged the Union government to review the proposed Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Control and Supervision of Experiment, Breeding and Trading of Laboratory Animals) Rules, 2026. He expressed concerns that the draft rules might weaken animal welfare safeguards and reduce independent regulatory oversight. Maran specifically pointed to the proposed allowance for institutional ethics committees to approve a wider range of experiments, questioning accountability and scrutiny.
