Kashmiri Pashmina Authenticity: Ring and Burn Tests Are Flawed Myths

Times of India · lifestyle

Many consumers are misled into buying imitation Kashmiri Pashmina, often made from polyester or viscose, despite sellers claiming authenticity. Genuine Pashmina, woven from the undercoat of Changthangi goats in Ladakh, is rare and expensive, costing upwards of ₹20,000. Common tests like the ring test, which checks if a shawl can pass through a finger ring, are unreliable. This test only indicates thinness, not authenticity, as modern synthetics can easily pass through. Similarly, the burn test, which mimics burning hair, cannot definitively prove Pashmina, as other animal hairs produce similar results.
