Times of India · environment

The Little Rann of Kutch in Gujarat is the last stronghold of the Indian wild ass, also known as the khur. Established in 1972, the sanctuary protects this unique species, which was once near extinction. A 2024 survey estimates the khur population at 7,672, a significant recovery from historical lows. The khur is remarkably adaptable, thriving in extreme temperatures and open, saline landscapes. Winter, from November to February, is the ideal time to visit for pleasant weather and unobstructed views of the animals, along with migratory birds.
