Russia's Ageing Nuclear Plants Face Dismantling Cost Crisis
Al Jazeera · world
Russia's nuclear power plants are ageing, with some reactors over 50 years old, posing significant risks. While Russia exports nuclear technology, the domestic issue of decommissioning its own facilities is largely overlooked. Rosenergoatom estimates a substantial funding shortfall of approximately 18.7 billion euros for dismantling 35 reactors, with total costs potentially reaching 21 billion euros. The company appears to be postponing costly dismantling stages by opting for long-term storage, deferring the financial and technical burden to the future.
