Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has accused the US government of hindering international efforts to regulate and monitor artificial intelligence, warning that the technology could be used to cause a pandemic significantly worse than Covid-19. Speaking at the FT’s Future of AI Summit, Gates emphasized the dual potential for good and harm from AI models. He urged the administration to establish benchmarks for AI safeguards and implement extensive monitoring systems to detect potential AI-enabled infections early. Gates believes self-regulation by AI companies is insufficient, necessitating government intervention to manage risks.
