The Ebola outbreak in Congo is escalating, with new hotspots emerging where patient support is minimal, according to health officials. Over 70% of new cases originate from outside known contacts, and more than 60% of deaths occur outside treatment centers. The conflict-battered North Kivu province has become the new epicentre, accounting for 40% of recent cases, but the response is described as chaotic with a lack of coordination and personnel. Congo has recorded over 8,500 cases in this outbreak, making it the country's deadliest and fastest-growing on record.
