Microsoft researchers have developed an AI tool that diagnoses patients step-by-step, mimicking a doctor's approach. This AI model was found to be more than twice as accurate as general physicians in solving complex medical cases, according to a study in Science. Unlike existing models that take an all-at-once approach, this AI uses an 'orchestrator' to coordinate questions, exams, and tests, updating its hypotheses throughout the process. The tool also proved more cost-effective than human doctors for diagnostic work-ups and will be tested for patient triage in emergency rooms.
