Bavarian state premier Markus Söder has called on conservative bloc members in Saxony-Anhalt to reveal if they voted for a far-right AfD candidate for state parliamentary speaker. Tobias Rausch of the AfD, whose party chapter is classified as right-wing extremist, was elected speaker in a secret ballot. Söder stated that those who voted for Rausch should demonstrate 'backbone' and make their decision public. This election marks the first time the AfD has secured such a position and the first instance of a right-wing extremist holding this rank in postwar Germany.
