Psychology Research Explains Why Some Children Avoid Outdoor Play
Times of India · education
New research suggests children's avoidance of activities like climbing, playing in mud, or getting wet may stem from repeated adult warnings about risks. A study observing three-to-five-year-olds found that constant cautions like 'be careful' can lead children to associate these activities with danger. This learned expectation can influence their decisions during outdoor play, even when no immediate threat exists. While temperament and experience also play a role, the findings highlight how adult communication shapes children's perception of everyday risks and exploration.
