India's Forex Reserves Fall For Fifth Week, Gold's Share Triples Amid Price Surge

Business Standard · business

India's foreign exchange reserves dropped to $726 billion in the week ending October 9, marking the fifth consecutive weekly decline. This fall was primarily driven by a decrease in foreign currency assets and the value of gold holdings, which together constitute 97% of the reserves. Gold's share in reserves has significantly increased, nearly tripling to 17.1% by August 2026 from 6.67% in 2019, largely due to soaring global gold prices. Despite its growing importance, gold reserves exhibit higher volatility compared to foreign currency assets.
