New Extinct Crocodile Species Found In Sphinx Rocks

Times of India - India · india

A new species of extinct crocodile, named Herugavialis cairensis, has been identified from fossils recovered nearly a century ago in Egypt's Mokattam Formation. These ancient rocks are the same ones used to construct the Great Sphinx. Intriguingly, the fossil's snout tip is missing, mirroring the Sphinx's famously absent nose. Modern paleontological techniques, including CT scanning, revealed anatomical differences significant enough to classify it as a new species. This discovery sheds light on a time when crocodiles thrived in the ancient Mediterranean.
