New Wild Cat Species Discovered in Bolivia

Scientists have identified a new species of wild cat, named Leopardus tilcayo, in Bolivia's cloud forests. This marks the first formal description of a new living cat species in over a century. The small, slender cat, known locally as Tilcayo, measures about 46 cm and weighs 1.4 kg. Researchers confirmed its distinctiveness through DNA analysis of 38 cats, revealing it separated from other tiger cats about 1.4 million years ago.

बोलीविया के क्लाउड फॉरेस्ट में वैज्ञानिकों ने एक नई जंगली बिल्ली की प्रजाति खोजी है, जिसका नाम Leopardus tilcayo रखा गया है। सौ साल से भी ज़्यादा समय बाद किसी नई जीवित बिल्ली प्रजाति का यह पहला औपचारिक वर्णन है। यह छोटी, पतली बिल्ली, जिसे स्थानीय लोग 'तिलकाय' कहते हैं, करीब 46 सेमी लंबी और 1.4 किलो की है। डीएनए जांच से पता चला है कि यह करीब 14 लाख साल पहले दूसरी बाघ बिल्लियों से अलग हुई थी।
