Indonesia Wildfires Threaten World's Oldest Cave Paintings

The Hindu - International · world

Indonesia's severe wildfires, the worst since 2015, are threatening the world's oldest cave paintings on Sulawesi island. Heat and smoke from the fires risk accelerating the deterioration of the over 67,000-year-old artworks. Firefighters have battled blazes near the Maros-Pangkep cave, with fires burning within 800 metres of the site. The intense heat and soot created by the fires can cause irreversible damage to the prehistoric art, potentially blurring or destroying the ancient depictions.
