Arctic Ice Expanded For 1,000 Years Before 1960 Peak

A new study reveals Arctic ice had been expanding for a millennium, reaching its greatest extent around 1960. Researchers found the Barnes Ice Cap in Canada began re-expanding approximately 2,000 years ago due to cooler summers. This natural glacial advance was halted and reversed by human-caused global warming and rising greenhouse gas emissions. The findings suggest human activity overwhelmed natural orbital cycles that would have otherwise led to another ice age. The ice cap has since been retreating.
