Sunflowers Absorbed Radioactive Isotopes After Chernobyl Disaster, Scientists Found
Times of India · science
Following the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster, scientists explored phytoremediation using sunflowers to absorb radioactive material. Experiments showed sunflowers could effectively remove cesium and strontium from contaminated water and soil due to their chemical similarities to essential plant nutrients. In one demonstration, sunflowers grown on rafts in a contaminated pond extracted approximately 95% of radionuclides within 10 days. This technique, also investigated after the Fukushima accident, utilizes plant roots to capture pollutants, transferring radioactive material into plant tissues.
