New Research Questions Necessity of Fasting Before Most Blood Tests

Aaj Tak · health

A recent study published in 'JAMA Internal Medicine' has challenged the long-standing practice of fasting before blood tests. Researchers examined 121 different blood tests and found that for over 111 of them, fasting for 10-12 hours made no significant difference to the results. The tradition of fasting originated decades ago due to observed increases in sugar and triglycerides after meals. While fasting is still necessary for specific tests like fasting blood sugar and lipid profiles, many routine tests can be performed without it, potentially alleviating discomfort for patients.
