Spain Clears Invasive Minnows From Mountain Lakes; Amphibians Return

Scientists in Spain have successfully restored two mountain lakes in the Pyrenees by removing invasive minnows. Using a biodegradable piscicide called rotenone in September 2025, the team eradicated the fish from Tres Estanys del Mig and Tres Estanys de Baix. Ten months later, amphibians and aquatic invertebrates, absent since 2014, have returned. The biodegradable nature of rotenone ensures minimal environmental impact, with its concentration decreasing significantly within weeks. This project, part of the LIFE RESQUE ALPYR initiative, aims to restore ecological balance in high-altitude lakes.
