Polluted Yamuna River Causes Insect Infestation, Staining Taj Mahal
Times of India · environment
The iconic Taj Mahal is facing renewed threats from environmental degradation as green and black stains reappear on its white marble. Swarms of non-biting midges are breeding in the polluted, stagnant waters of the Yamuna River, settling on the monument and leaving behind unsightly droppings. ASI officials confirmed the infestation affects the northern facade, lattice screens, and marble bases. While the agency will clean the affected surfaces, conservationists warn that only cleaning the Yamuna River and restoring its water flow can address the root cause of the recurring problem.
