London's Railway Soil Rebuilds Essex Wetlands, Boosting Birdlife to Record Numbers

Times of India · environment

Over three million tonnes of soil excavated for London's Elizabeth line were transported to Wallasea Island in Essex. This material was used to raise the ground and create new coastal wetlands. A decade after seawalls were removed to allow the sea back, the RSPB reserve has recorded a record 39,000 wintering birds. The restored landscape now provides vital feeding and nesting areas, attracting thousands of species like Knot and Avocets. This project demonstrates a successful collaboration between infrastructure development and habitat restoration.
