Winnie the Pooh's Real-Life Origins: A Bear, A Swan, And A Boy's Toys
Hindustan Times · interesting
Winnie the Pooh, the beloved children's character, originated from a North American black bear named Winnie, acquired by veterinarian Harry Colebourn in 1914. The bear was later housed at the London Zoo, where author A.A. Milne and his son Christopher Robin first encountered her. The character Pooh was inspired by a swan Christopher Robin saw, with the name later combined with the bear's. The Hundred Acre Wood setting was based on Sussex's Ashdown Forest, near the Milne family's country home.
