Pallikaranai Marsh Becomes Year-Round Home For Spot-Billed Pelicans
Times of India · environment
Pallikaranai marsh in Chennai has transformed into a permanent habitat for spot-billed pelicans, with hundreds now feeding and breeding there year-round. Long-term monitoring by the Nature Trust reveals an average of 475 pelicans present at any given time. This shift is attributed to the marsh's unique tidal rhythm, which brings a consistent supply of fish and marine life. The wetland also serves as a crucial nesting site, with around 500 chicks taking flight annually, highlighting its importance for the globally threatened species.
