UP Proposes Rs 1,000 Stamp Duty on Rental Agreements

Uttar Pradesh is considering a new stamp duty of Rs 1,000 for rental agreements with an annual rent of Rs 2 lakh. This move aims to simplify and reduce the cost of registering rent agreements, which are currently often unregistered due to high stamp duty and registration charges. Legal experts believe the proposed changes will encourage formalisation of rental arrangements, benefiting both tenants and landlords. The reforms are expected to complement the Uttar Pradesh Urban Premises Tenancy Regulation Act, 2021, by making it easier to implement and reducing landlord-tenant disputes.
