The Kerala High Court has urged the Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) to actively revoke driving licences of individuals caught driving under the influence of alcohol. Justice Kauser Edappagath noted a reluctance by the department to invoke this power, which diminishes the legal provision's deterrent effect. The court emphasized that drunken driving incidents continue to cause fatalities and devastation, making it imperative for authorities to exercise their powers under Section 19 of the Motor Vehicle Act seriously. केरल हाई कोर्ट ने मोटर वाहन विभाग (MVD) से कहा है कि शराब के नशे में गाड़ी चलाने वाले लोगों के ड्राइविंग लाइसेंस सक्रिय रूप से रद्द करें। जस्टिस कौसर एडप्पागाथ ने कहा कि विभाग इस शक्ति का उपयोग करने में हिचकिचा रहा है, जिससे कानून का निवारक प्रभाव कम हो रहा है। कोर्ट ने इस बात पर जोर दिया कि नशे में गाड़ी चलाने की घटनाओं से लगातार मौतें और तबाही हो रही है, इसलिए अधिकारियों के लिए मोटर वाहन अधिनियम की धारा 19 के तहत अपनी शक्तियों का गंभीरता से उपयोग करना अनिवार्य है। जवाबदेही और खतरनाक सड़क व्यवहार को रोकने के लिए प्रभावी प्रवर्तन महत्वपूर्ण है।
