Supreme Court Warns Against Indefinite Jail Before Trial

Hindustan Times · india

The Supreme Court has cautioned that the legal process should not become a punishment in itself, especially when it leads to prolonged incarceration before a trial concludes. A bench emphasized that constitutional safeguards under Article 21 of the Constitution cannot be overridden by stringent laws like the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Investigating agencies must complete their probes expeditiously and cannot justify keeping an accused in jail indefinitely.
