Madras HC Refuses Review on Plastic Warning Labels

The Madras High Court has dismissed a review petition filed by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The FSSAI had urged the court to reconsider its order mandating warning labels on bottled water, sugar, and salt sold in plastic packaging. The court stated the warning is to inform consumers, not to declare the products unsafe. FSSAI argued that research on micro/nano plastics is inconclusive and such warnings could cause public panic and supply chain disruption.

मद्रास हाईकोर्ट ने भारतीय खाद्य सुरक्षा और मानक प्राधिकरण (FSSAI) द्वारा दायर एक समीक्षा याचिका खारिज कर दी है। FSSAI ने अदालत से प्लास्टिक पैकेजिंग में बिकने वाले बोतलबंद पानी, चीनी और नमक पर चेतावनी लेबल अनिवार्य करने के अपने आदेश पर पुनर्विचार करने का आग्रह किया था। अदालत ने कहा कि चेतावनी उपभोक्ताओं को सूचित करने के लिए है, न कि उत्पादों को असुरक्षित घोषित करने के लिए। FSSAI ने तर्क दिया कि माइक्रो/नैनो प्लास्टिक पर शोध अनिर्णायक है और ऐसी चेतावनियों से जनता में घबराहट और आपूर्ति श्रृंखला में बाधा आ सकती है।
