BBC World · world

The strengthening El Niño phenomenon is significantly impacting global weather patterns, leading to extreme events like droughts, floods, and heatwaves. Indonesia is experiencing its worst wildfire season since 2015, with nearly 900,000 hectares burned, causing school closures and respiratory illnesses for thousands. In the eastern Pacific, El Niño has supercharged hurricane activity, with 22 named storms and 10 major hurricanes already recorded this season. The World Meteorological Agency predicts this record-breaking El Niño will persist and strengthen further until at least 2027.
