Maharashtra Govt Challenges Food Regulator's Powers In Bombay High Court

The Maharashtra government has filed a petition in the Bombay High Court against the Union health ministry and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The state alleges that the FSSAI has encroached upon the powers of state food safety authorities by creating a parallel enforcement system. The petition challenges a 2023 FSSAI order that reportedly restricts state officials from enforcing food safety laws for businesses holding central licenses. Maharashtra argues that the 2006 Food Safety and Standards Act intended for state officials to be responsible for enforcement.
