Actress Shailene Woodley joined scientists in the remote Sargasso Sea in 2019 to collect microplastic samples. This North Atlantic ecosystem, defined by ocean currents, was chosen for its isolation from coastal pollution. One collected sample revealed a concerning 1,298 microplastic fragments, demonstrating how plastic accumulates even in distant waters. The findings highlight the pervasive nature of microplastic pollution, which exists unseen beneath the ocean's surface, impacting marine life and ecosystems far from human activity.
