Japan's Popular Princess Aiko Barred From Throne Due to Male-Only Succession Law
Hindustan Times · world
Princess Aiko, Japan's most popular royal, is legally unable to become empress due to the country's imperial succession law, which permits only male-line descendants to inherit the throne. Enacted in 1947 and based on 1889 rules, the law restricts succession to Emperor Naruhito's brother, his son, and his uncle. Despite 72% public support for female succession in an April 2026 poll, the government has backed amendments allowing women to retain royal status but not inherit the throne. This maintains the male-line succession, which has been in place for 126 generations.
