New Zealand's 1940s Wetland Reclaimers Now Face Decades Of Eradication
Hindustan Times · environment
Cordgrass, or spartina, was introduced to New Zealand in the 1940s to stabilize coastal land for grazing. However, the fast-growing, salt-tolerant plant aggressively spread across tidal mudflats, becoming a significant invader. Scientists noted its rapid spread and mud accumulation, which damaged vital habitats for birds and shellfish. For over four decades, eradication efforts, including herbicide spraying, have been ongoing. The Department of Conservation continues these efforts, emphasizing that inaction would lead to further habitat loss.
