Noida Yamuna Floodplains Show Dangerous Nitrate Contamination Levels
Times of India · environment
Groundwater in Noida's Yamuna floodplains is dangerously contaminated with nitrate, with some samples testing nearly double the permissible limit. In 2025, water samples from Choroli, Jewar, and Dadri showed nitrate levels of 95.4 mg/L and 74 mg/L, far exceeding the Bureau of Indian Standards' limit of 45 mg/L for safe drinking water. Previous studies in 2023 also indicated high concentrations, reaching 160 mg/L in Choroli and Jewar. This contamination poses significant health risks, including Blue Baby Syndrome, and is linked to sewage and industrial waste leaching into the groundwater.
