Southern India Faces Water Scarcity Due To Deficient Monsoon

Business Standard · environment

Southern India is preparing for significant water stress and potential droughts due to a deficient monsoon season. Chennai, in particular, relies heavily on external water sources, with the Telugu Ganga project supplying 25-30% of its drinking water from the Krishna river in Andhra Pradesh. This inter-state project has been crucial for meeting the city's needs since its first water delivery in September 1996. The current monsoon deficit poses a serious challenge to water availability across the region, impacting millions of residents.
