Rare Hawaii Coral Returns To Wild Habitat

A rare coral species, endemic to Hawaii's Kaneohe Bay, has been successfully returned to its natural habitat after disappearing from the wild. Marine biologists rescued fragments in 2015, placing them in a special collection called the Rare Hawaiian Coral Ark. Land-based nurseries used microfragmentation to grow these fragments rapidly. This method significantly speeds up coral growth, allowing mature colonies to be produced in one to two years, compared to hundreds of years naturally.
