1.5°C Warming Breach Risks Irreversible Glacier Damage, Report Warns

Times of India · science

A new report warns that temporarily exceeding the 1.5-degree Celsius global warming threshold could cause irreversible damage to Earth's glaciers and ice sheets. Lead author James Kirkham stated that the impacts would extend beyond remote regions, affecting communities more broadly. The report, titled 'Overshoot and the Cryosphere,' was prepared by the International Cryosphere Climate Initiative in coordination with the UN Environment Programme. Further temperature rises are expected to significantly worsen climate-related impacts, potentially leading to permanent consequences.
