Sugar Prices Surge 14% Ahead of Diwali, Hitting Consumers' Pockets
TV9 Hindi · business
Wholesale sugar prices have seen a significant surge of 14% to 17% in just six days, just before the Diwali and Dhanteras festivals. Prices in Uttar Pradesh mills have risen from ₹4,600 to ₹5,200 per quintal, while rates in Maharashtra and Karnataka have crossed ₹5,100 per quintal. This sharp increase is attributed to higher demand during the festive season, delays in the new crushing season, and diversion of sugarcane for ethanol blending. The rising costs are expected to put a strain on household budgets during the upcoming celebrations.
