West Bengal Fishermen Demand Climate Risk Insurance and Stronger Rights

Small-scale fishermen from West Bengal have called for enhanced protection of traditional fishing rights, climate-risk insurance, and broader social security coverage. During a community consultation for India's National Plan of Action for Small-Scale Fisheries, delegates highlighted concerns about customary rights, welfare access, and disaster preparedness. They urged authorities to protect tenure, ensure Free, Prior and Informed Consent for coastal development, and implement tailored insurance for livelihood losses. The consultation also stressed the need for faster identity card issuance and greater inclusion of women in policy discussions and disaster management.

पश्चिम बंगाल के छोटे पैमाने के मछुआरों ने पारंपरिक मछली पकड़ने के अधिकारों की बढ़ी हुई सुरक्षा, जलवायु-जोखिम बीमा और व्यापक सामाजिक सुरक्षा कवरेज की मांग की है। भारत की छोटे पैमाने की मत्स्य पालन के लिए राष्ट्रीय कार्य योजना के लिए एक सामुदायिक परामर्श के दौरान, प्रतिनिधियों ने प्रथागत अधिकारों, कल्याण तक पहुंच और आपदा तैयारी के बारे में चिंता जताई। उन्होंने अधिकारियों से कार्यकाल की सुरक्षा करने, तटीय विकास के लिए स्वतंत्र, पूर्व और सूचित सहमति सुनिश्चित करने और आजीविका के नुकसान के लिए अनुरूप बीमा लागू करने का आग्रह किया।
