Mumbai's Air Quality Deteriorates Sharply, Exceeding Healthy Levels
Business Standard · environment
Mumbai's air quality has significantly worsened, with the average daily Air Quality Index more than doubling to 102 in October from 45.4 in September. This marks the second time in seven years that the index has surpassed 100, classifying the air as unhealthy. Concentrations of harmful PM2.5 particles have more than tripled. Historically, coastal winds protected the city, but an El Niño event has weakened these winds, trapping local pollutants. Factors like traffic, construction, and urban density are contributing to this sharp deterioration, a trend expected to continue.
