Massive Rock Avalanche Likely Caused Nepal Flood
Times of India · world
A massive rock avalanche, potentially including glacial ice, is believed to have triggered a destructive flash flood in Nepal's Budhi Gandaki valley. Preliminary scientific assessments suggest debris temporarily blocked a river, leading to the disaster that left five people missing and damaged infrastructure. The event occurred less than 100km from a previous Rasuwa avalanche. Scientists estimate the collapsed material could total tens of millions of cubic metres, with the avalanche travelling about 7km. The blockage likely failed, releasing water, sediment, and rocks downstream.
