India Plans National Repository to Preserve Tribal Languages

Hindustan Times · education

India's Ministry of Tribal Affairs is establishing a national repository, named Adi Vaani, to digitally preserve and promote indigenous tribal languages. The initiative aims to consolidate scattered linguistic research, dictionaries, and community stories onto a common platform, reducing duplication and improving access for researchers and educators. Experts emphasize community ownership of resources and mother-tongue-based multilingual education. Over 400 of India's approximately 780 languages are tribal, with around 220 lost in five decades and 123 endangered languages identified by UNESCO being tribal.
