Business Standard · business

Despite near-record global grain supplies and stable cereal stocks, international food prices are increasing. The FAO Food Price Index rose 1.5% in September from August, and 5.8% year-on-year. Conflicts are disrupting grain shipments, energy, and fertilizer trade, raising production and transportation costs. El Niño also threatens agricultural output, potentially leading to a production shock for the 2027 harvest. Supply chain disruptions, including those in the Black Sea and around the Strait of Hormuz, are significantly impacting commodity prices and freight rates.
