Credit card spending in India saw a 5.9% annual decline in September, reaching ₹2.04 lakh crore, the first such drop since February 2021. This decrease is attributed to a high base from the previous year, the shift of festive shopping to October, and reduced online spending. Online credit card expenditure fell by 12.5%, while in-store spending saw a 7.18% increase. Despite the spending dip, the number of credit cards in circulation continues to rise.
