Police Must Register Zero FIRs Regardless of Jurisdiction Under New Law

Times of India · india

Under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, police are mandated to register a Zero FIR even if an incident occurred outside their territorial limits. Officers cannot refuse to record information based on jurisdiction; instead, they must register the FIR and transfer it to the competent police station. If police refuse, complainants can submit a written complaint to the Superintendent of Police or approach the Magistrate for an investigation order. This ensures that victims can report cognisable offences promptly, regardless of location, preventing delays in urgent cases.
