The Union government has approved a ₹900 subsidy per smart meter, easing the financial burden on Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) and consumers. KSEB is implementing a smart-metering project under the Capex model, investing itself rather than relying on private agencies. The second phase of the project is sanctioned at ₹3,260 crore, aiming to cover 35 lakh consumers with potential expansion to 50 lakh. This initiative includes various consumer categories, public charging stations, and KSEB offices, with monthly billing consumers also being included.
